The 2017 Alternatives Whitinsville Palette Contest is here! It’s the 5th Annual Palette Contest. Here’s how this works.
You go to the Alternatives Whitinsville location during their normal working hours and buy the palette for $15. That is your entry fee. You can then decorate that palette in ANY way you wish. You can paint it. Cyanotype it. Cut it into pieces and reassemble them. Burn images into it. Build on top of it. The winners then get cash prizes and world-wide acclaim!
You can pick up your palette any time before February 24, 2017. The palette needs to be dropped off by March 2, 2017.
The show runs from March 10 through April 28, 2017. The opening reception is Friday, March 10th from 4:30 – 7:30pm.
There are cash prizes in three age categories:
18 and up: $300, $200, $100
12-17: $100, $75, $50
6-11: $75, $50, $25

This show is not run by the BVAA, but lots of BVAA members enter every year. It’s great fun! And it’s for a great cause.
The 2017 Palette Show is now over! Here are the photos!
Our January 2017 meeting is moving from its usual date and time! For January we will be having our monthly meeting on SUNDAY January 22nd from 1:30 to 4pm. This will be a hands-on demonstration of papermaking, hosted by artist Joe Ray.
It’s hands on so please wear clothing that can get messy :). If you have a tarp for a table that would be helpful, too!
You can bring along your own items to include in the paper if you wish. Typical items are flower petals, pine needles, and the like.
As always, our monthly meeting will be held at the:
Northbridge Senior Center
20 Highland Street
Whitinsville, MA 01590
Our monthly meetings are open to the public and are supported in part by grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
Here is Joe’s website to learn more about him:

The BVAA will be taking a field trip to the Tower Hill light show “Winter Reimagined” on January 4, 2017 at 6pm. Tower Hill is time-ticketing the show this year meaning you have to buy a ticket for a specific time in order to enter. They are doing this to help stagger the crowds. The show has been selling out each day so be sure to get your tickets soon.
Their discounted tickets from libraries and such are NOT functional for this special show. You need to buy your Winter Reimagined show tickets online. If you have any challenges with that process contact the BVAA and we’ll lend a hand.
Sundown is at 4:30pm and by 6pm we’ll have full dark, so we’ll be able to fully appreciate the lights.
The show runs through January 8, 2017.
Here’s the full details:
Happy Winter Solstice! The FREE 2016 winter issue of Mused is now live! The cover photograph is by BVAA’s own Carol Dandrade. The issue features short stories, poetry, photography, painting, essays, and more! Share the news!
Here are the images for our Blackstone Valley Art Association 2017 Wall Calendar. Congratulations to all BVAA artists who were chosen by the votes of their peers.
To buy your very own copy, click below. Note that you can choose the month the calendar begins with, so even if you see this note after December 2016 you can still buy a copy and have it useful for a full 12 months :). The images on the calendar will stay in sync with the proper months, so you’ll still get the December boys-bringing-home-Christmas-tree painting to go with December.
Do you enjoy food? Take a look at this cool new opportunity!
