2017 Spring Show – Month of June – Blackstone Valley Visitor Center

Our Blackstone Valley Art Association Spring Show will be held the entire month of June in 2017! We’ll be holding it at the lovely Blackstone Valley Visitor Center in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

You can see what the gallery space looks like here:

From Carol F: Our big show of the season is coming up! I went to see the Visitor’s center, this week. Great spot. 3 walls are carpeted and the 3rd is all glass, making it very enticing to visitors to go in and see the show.  It also serves as a bus stop area so there is a fair amount of traffic. That time of year it is open on weekends. The volunteer there that day could not have been nicer and informative. I think we should leave a blurb about the BVAA history with the volunteers and some cards or membership forms.  There is a historical Mill across the street, it was late afternoon so there were great shadows on them and a waterfall. It would be fun to have a paint out there on the opening day.

Juror
The juror for the Spring Show is Craig Masten. I think you will enjoy his web site CraigMasten.com. He writes a description of each work of art.

Submissions
Submit your details online by Monday, May 22nd to give us time to create the labels and plan out the hanging. The entry fee is $20 for up to 3 pieces. One can be 16×20 or larger, but please keep the other two smaller so we have room for everyone.

Drop-Off
You can drop off works from Wednesday, May 24th through Friday, May 26th between 10am and 4pm. Ask for Wendy. If you can’t make these dates, talk with Pam or Carol to arrange an alternative plan.

Hanging
The show will be hung on Saturday, May 27th from 10-12 noon. The show will be live for viewers on Sunday, May 28th.

Reception
The public reception for this show will be on Sunday, June 11th from 1pm to 3:30pm. Invite friends and family!

Take Down
We will be taking the show down on Tuesday, June 27th between 10am and 4pm so we are done before the July 4th weekend.

Start planning what you’ll bring – this will be a good opportunity for those larger pieces if you have them!

We’ll add in more details here as we get them.

We are going to have two feature displays at this show.

Blackstone Valley Calendar
Several BVAA members had their photography featured in the Blackstone Valley Heritage Corridor Calendar. You’ll be able to see the originals featured here.

Dot Downing Memorial
Carol Frieswick has some of her paintings and a poem John wrote. If anyone has pics of her they want to share, we can do a collage as well.

The gallery takes a 20% commission, so that will be the entire commission on any sales – the BVAA wouldn’t take anything on top of that.

Press Notice for 2017 Art-Poetry Show

Here’s what we’re sending around about our upcoming March 2017 Art-Poetry show:

……..

Greetings!

I wanted to let you know about a cool show which will be at the Worcester Public Library for the month of March. Here’s the details. Let me know if you’d like to learn anything else! I can send images …

“Painting is silent poetry,
And poetry is painting that speaks.”
— Plutarch

The Blackstone Valley Art Association has paired up with the Sutton Writing Group and the Worcester Writers Collaborative to present an intriguing pairing of art and poetry. The venue is the Worcester Public Library main branch on Salem Street in Worcester. The dates are the entire month of March. It’s an adventure in creativity!

Here’s how it worked. Each visual artist was teamed up with a poet. The artist gave that poet a work of art. It might be a photograph, a watercolor, an oil painting, an acrylic, or anything else. The poet then had to write a poem about that work.

Happening at the same time, the poet wrote an original poem on anything they wanted. It might be an ode to snow. A haiku about raindrops. Whatever the poet chose to write, the artist now had to represent those words visually. The artist was allowed to interpret that poem in any way they wished.

The resulting pairs will be on display!

In some cases the artist did their best to literally portray the scene laid out in the poem. In other cases, the artist explored the mood or feeling of the written work. The same was true for the poets. Some poets described what might be happening in the visual image. Other poets delved into the feelings that the piece of art brought about.

We’ll be having a meet-the-artists-and-poets event during the exhibition period. Please check the Blackstone Valley Art Association’s website at BVAA.org to find out the date and time of that reception. On our website you’ll also be able to learn more about the artists, poets, and the works as well.

We look forward to meeting you!

Worcester Public Library Display Cases

Here are the cases available at the Worcester Public Library for displaying artwork.

There are two areas for display, with the cafe in between them. First, the center-main-floor area. This area has two rows of two floor cases each (on tables) and then two vertical (wall) cases behind them. Six cases total. In this image you are looking down on top of the four floor cases and then looking straight-on at the two wall cases on the top.

To help visualize this, here are photos of those cases.

Next up, by the doors there is an area with two tabletop cases and then two wall cases. Again, the tabletop cases are shown with a top-down view and the wall cases are shown from a side-on view.
