Press Notice for 2017 Art-Poetry Show

Here’s what we’re sending around about our upcoming March 2017 Art-Poetry show:

……..

Greetings!

I wanted to let you know about a cool show which will be at the Worcester Public Library for the month of March. Here’s the details. Let me know if you’d like to learn anything else! I can send images …

“Painting is silent poetry,
And poetry is painting that speaks.”
— Plutarch

The Blackstone Valley Art Association has paired up with the Sutton Writing Group and the Worcester Writers Collaborative to present an intriguing pairing of art and poetry. The venue is the Worcester Public Library main branch on Salem Street in Worcester. The dates are the entire month of March. It’s an adventure in creativity!

Here’s how it worked. Each visual artist was teamed up with a poet. The artist gave that poet a work of art. It might be a photograph, a watercolor, an oil painting, an acrylic, or anything else. The poet then had to write a poem about that work.

Happening at the same time, the poet wrote an original poem on anything they wanted. It might be an ode to snow. A haiku about raindrops. Whatever the poet chose to write, the artist now had to represent those words visually. The artist was allowed to interpret that poem in any way they wished.

The resulting pairs will be on display!

In some cases the artist did their best to literally portray the scene laid out in the poem. In other cases, the artist explored the mood or feeling of the written work. The same was true for the poets. Some poets described what might be happening in the visual image. Other poets delved into the feelings that the piece of art brought about.

We’ll be having a meet-the-artists-and-poets event during the exhibition period. Please check the Blackstone Valley Art Association’s website at BVAA.org to find out the date and time of that reception. On our website you’ll also be able to learn more about the artists, poets, and the works as well.

We look forward to meeting you!

Worcester Public Library Display Cases

Here are the cases available at the Worcester Public Library for displaying artwork.

There are two areas for display, with the cafe in between them. First, the center-main-floor area. This area has two rows of two floor cases each (on tables) and then two vertical (wall) cases behind them. Six cases total. In this image you are looking down on top of the four floor cases and then looking straight-on at the two wall cases on the top.

To help visualize this, here are photos of those cases.

Next up, by the doors there is an area with two tabletop cases and then two wall cases. Again, the tabletop cases are shown with a top-down view and the wall cases are shown from a side-on view.

Sunflower Show at Booklovers’ Gourmet – August 2017

Our August 2017 Sunflower Show celebrates the sunny beautiful flower! It’s held at the:
Booklovers’ Gourmet
55 E Main St
Webster, MA 01570

About the Show
If there ever was a flower which symbolized glorious summertime, the sunflower is the one. Did you know that nearly all of the 70 species of sunflowers are native to North America? They can grow to be up to six feet tall and they even tilt as the sun moves so they always face it!

The Blackstone Valley Art Association is celebrating this sun-shaped delight with a sunflower show throughout the month of August at the Booklovers’ Gourmet in Webster. Our show complements the massive garden of live sunflowers which the bookstore is famous for. Come on out to admire the live flowers, appreciate the artistic versions, and explore the shop’s offerings!

Submissions
The submission deadline for the sunflower show is Monday, July 17th, 2017. We have limited wall space here so what we’ll do is have each member submit an image or two they’d like to include. Depending on how many entries we get, we’ll see how many items we can hang per person. It’s open to all BVAA members. This is not a judged show – it is primarily a visibility and sales opportunity. Any sales will include a 25% commission taken by the shop. The BVAA takes no commission on this show. Full BVAA terms: BVAA Show Terms and Conditions

Update: We got enough entries that we are going with one per person! The list:

Claflin Hill Waterscapes Art and Music – Mar 4 2017

The BVAA, in conjunction with the Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra, is offering a fun night of art and music! The orchestra provides the music while the BVAA provides the art!
Milford Town Hall
52 Main Street
Milford, MA 01757

On Saturday, March 4th, 2017 from 7:30-10:00pm the Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra will be performing a show. The BVAA will have art up for patrons to enjoy before the show and during intermission. This is an art-loving audience and we see good sales at these shows.

Submissions
Deadline to submit your titles and sizes via the online form is Monday, February 27th. This gives us time to determine how many panels will be needed. There’s no fee to participate and the show is open to all BVAA members. Anne will then respond back to everyone with a copy of the labels to proof and approve. If you don’t submit your information by Monday night you may still be able to participate, but your labels might not be proofed. This show is displayed on panels so works submitted need to be less than 36″ wide in order to fit on a panel. Any sales will include a 20% BVAA commission. Full BVAA terms: BVAA Show Terms and Conditions.

Drop-Off
Drop-Off for the show will be Friday, March 3rd from 4-6pm. Everything will be set up Friday night so it’s ready to go for Saturday. If you can’t make it on Friday, you can drop off Thursday during their open hours. Just put the artwork up in the performance hall. We’ve never had any issue with items being left there.

Public Viewing
Participating artists get free entry to enjoy the show! Let us know if you’re interested in attending the music!

Pick-Up
Pick-up will be Sunday morning from 8-10am. If you can’t make that, email us to make other arrangements.

Theme
The music being performed will be:

Vaughan-Williams Symphony No. 1 “A Sea Symphony”
Debussy Nocturnes-The Sunken Cathedral

We should aim to bring the best art in our libraries, to match the high quality of the performance. That being said, if you have two great pieces and one features a watery theme then that might be a perfect one to choose!

Use the BVAA Online Submission Form to submit for this show.

Volunteers Needed
The BVAA is run by volunteers – please lend a hand! We need volunteers for the following activities:
* Hang the show from 5-6 on Friday
* Take it down at 8:30 on Sunday.

Let us know on your submission form how you’re able to help out. There is a 20% commission on sales – this commission is forgiven for those who help out!

March 2017 Monthly Meeting – Batik Watercolor with Bonnie Frederiko

Our March 2017 meeting will be a demonstration of Batik Watercolor with Bonnie Frederiko.

As always, our monthly meeting will be held at the:
Northbridge Senior Center
20 Highland Street
Whitinsville, MA 01590

Our monthly meetings are open to the public and are supported in part by grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

Our monthly meetings traditionally begin with about a half-hour of reviewing upcoming events and sharing member news. Then we go into the actual demo or workshop.

From Carol F:
I think we have enough paint and brushes and she will bring some of the materials. Everyone will need a .05 permanent micro pen. We will need water containers, paper towels, and masking tape. If members have a #8 watercolor or acrylic brush please bring it along. You may also want to bring your own watercolors if you have them, they may be better then what we have. Bonnie will sell you a brush and pen for $16 if you need them. Her sample piece is done in pinks but she will have us do it in yellow so we will have submissions for the Sunflower show (our August show at the Booklovers’ Gourmet). It might be interesting to do a wall of all the same image.

Bonnie would like a head count, so if you are planning on attending please let us know, so we will have the proper
supplies.

Here’s some photos of the finished works!

Milford TV Art Show – Mar-Apr 2017 – Animals

Every two months we rotate the show at the Milford TV Station. The drop-off for the upcoming March – April 2017 show on the theme of “Animals” is Thursday, February 23rd from 6-8pm.

This date is also the reception (and take down) for the existing “Winter” show. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend! It’s a great time to meet the artists, view local art, and learn about the art opportunities in the region.

For participating artists, please bring food or drink to share!

The Milford TV Station is at:
138 South Main Street
Milford, MA

This is a plaza with a D’Angelo’s, a Hair Unlimited Salon, and Milford Hardwood.

https://www.milfordtv.net/

The Milford people do the labels and hanging for us, so there is no need to use our online submission form to indicate what you’re bringing. Simply be sure to label the back of each piece with its title, your name, and the price. Milford does not take any commission on sales.

If you can’t make it to the party just drop off your works any time during the week that they’re open. Call ahead to check the hours!

This show is for BVAA members only and is free to participate in. Most artists bring in three items but if you have more that’s great! In general, the items can be any size or shape – Milford has a great hanging system which can accommodate pretty much anything. That being said, for this particular show it’s small works for quick sales!

We hope to see you there – and spread the word!

2017 Sutton Art Festival – June

Mark your calendar for the Third Annual Sutton Art Festival being held on Saturday, June 3rd, 2017!

The show is open to the public from 10am to 3pm. BVAA members should aim to get there around 9am to help set up the tents. We will have two tents and ten panels, so bring 3-4 pieces each. Make sure they’re wired for hanging and they are fully labeled on the back. No need to tell us up front the titles. You can put a business card in the frame if you wish.

There’s no fee to participate. Our standard 20% commission on sales is waived if you hang out and lend a hand!

If you’re planning on hanging out we suggest you bring a chair and a bottle of water. They will have food available there for purchase. We definitely can use help with people hanging out and watching over the tents!

The show is held on the Sutton Common. To find this, look up the First Congregational Church at 307 Boston Road, Sutton MA. This is immediately on the common. There is ample parking in their parking lot.

The festival is held rain or shine. They have an indoor option – but the weather is looking lovely!

We have found in the past that images of Sutton itself do REALLY well – and bin art sells well as well. Definitely bring bin art if you have any!

People love to watch us paint and craft. If you’ve got an easel or other painting / drawing project, bring it along!

Share the news with family and friends – this is a great all-ages fair with crafts, art, books, and more!

20 Highland Street
Whitinsville, MA 01590

Our monthly meetings are open to the public and are supported in part by grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
