October Hands-On Demo – Food Photography with Al Weems

Al Weems Food
Al Weems Food

Our October meeting will feature an amazing hands-on demo with published food photographer Al Weems! Everyone brings in a colorful food dish – an appetizer / single-serving size is best for photography purposes. Then Al will show us how to capture them best on camera. This will be a perfect session as we head into the prime “food” season of Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas!

Al Weems is known, amongst many other things, for his beautiful cookbook featuring Rhode Island chefs.

Give thought to what you’d like to bring along. The more colorful the better! And bring along whatever camera you wish to use. Cellphone, pocket-sized, film, it doesn’t matter. The more variety the more fun we’ll have.

Meeting is the normal Tuesday, October 20th from 6:30-9pm at the Northbridge Senior Center. All active BVAA members are welcome to attend!

Alternatives Gallery
Alternatives Gallery

The Blackstone Valley 58th Annual Fall Art Show will be held at the Spaulding R. Aldrich Heritage Gallery in the Alternatives building in Whitinsville, MA. The opening reception is on Friday, November 6th from 4-8pm. All are welcome!

The exhibit runs through December 31st.

The juror for this show will be Charlotte Wharton.

Drop-off date is Friday, October 30 between 9:00 AM and 7:00 PM

From the gallery:
All artwork must be clean and ready to hang with wire hangers. (No saw tooth hangers, please!) Every piece of art must be clearly labeled on the front and back with the following: Artist name, title of work, medium, and price (or NFS, if not for sale). We ask that you please use two labels with the same information, so that the work can be hung and labeled without confusion. The label on the front will be removed for the show, so please use something easily removed.

The Gallery charges a 25% commission on any work sold as a result of the show. This money goes towards the cost of having the show. We pay for advertising in the Quarterly Event calendar to more than 20,000 homes in the Blackstone Valley. We also create and mail a postcard to our ValleyCAST arts and culture list of more than 1,500. We will also use social media to promote the show. The Gallery pays for the food and beverage at the opening (although any food, wine, beer, and or monetary contributions are happily accepted). The work will be hung in the Gallery by Alternatives.

PLEASE NOTE: We will make every effort to hang each piece in its best possible light, but please be aware that it is NOT possible for every piece to be hung front and center.

Pick-up dates are Monday & Tuesday, January 4 & 5 between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM.

Submission details:

Up to 3 pieces for $20. Must be wired, up to 16×20 in size. Use the Online Submission Form. Deadline for submission is 10/26.

Cirque de Noir – Sprinkler Factory

October 17, 2015 will showcase the 2015 Cirque de Noir art event! This is held at the Sprinkler Factory in Worcester, MA. It runs from 7-11pm and dress is all black. It features a number of fun events including a paint-rotation where there are perhaps five artists in front of five easels. They paint for a little while then all slide one easel right. They work on that painting for a little while then all slide right again. It’s lots of fun to see how the paintings evolve!
