PVC Pipe Painting for River Bend Fishing Derby

This is a last-minute call, so please respond promptly to Lisa if you’re interested in helping out!

The Blackstone Heritage Corridor is doing a big push to have fishing people properly dispose of their fishing lines. If those lines are allowed to just get “thrown into the wind” they end up hurting animals, tangling in trees, and making a mess. So to help with this, they are installing PVC pipe disposal units in fishing spots.

These pipes are functional but fairly intrusive looking. As we gear up for the 2016 Fishing Derby at River Bend Farm in Uxbridge on Saturday, May 21st, they’ve made four pipes to install. They would like these to be pretty! To fit more nicely into the River Bend walking paths. The pipes are done –

Now they’re looking for local artists to paint them. The painting can be birds, or fish, or whatever strikes your imagination. The stickers will be put up separately so you don’t have to worry about stickers going over your artwork. Your artwork will stand alone.

If you know how to paint on PVC (and then coat it so it stands up to outdoor location) please let Lisa know promptly! The fishing derby is coming up quickly and we would want to get started on it soon.

Here’s an article in the Worcester Telegram about the project –

Whitinsville Art and Antique Center

The BVAA has engaged in a partnership with Whitinsville Art and Antique Center located at 202 Church Street in Whitinsville. They have a section of their store that we will be able to use to sell artwork from and they are getting good traffic, especially at the weekends.

As this is not like our usual shows and the store would like to sell the items we are changing our system slightly.

  • Opening reception Saturday 25th June, 2016
  • Duration through end of September then change out for holiday season which will run through end of December
  • Subject matter: Preference is for local interest and pictorial in nature.
  • As this is not an exhibition, all items must be for sale
  • Painting, photography, 2D and 3D artwork is accepted
  • Maximum of three pieces
  • Sales price to be less than $300
  • Gallery will collect 30% commission
  • Payment of sales tax is the responsibility of the artist
  • All pieces to be wired and framed
  • Depending upon the level of interest we may have to limit the number of participants
  • Please send the following info to info@bvaa.org by 11th June
    • Photo of your artwork in jpg format, maximum file size of 1MB
    • Titles
    • Prices
    • Dimensions
    • Artists bio
  • In the event that we do not have enough space then the BVAA and the store will determine which items to accept.
  • If any pieces are rejected then the artist will be given preferential placement for the next session.
  • We will advise whether your artwork has been accepted by 18th June

This looks like a great opportunity to sell artwork to the local community and we encourage everyone to participate.

End-of-Year Pot Luck Party

event-2016-05-potluck

May is traditionally the end of the meetings year for the Blackstone Valley Art Association! We don’t have meetings in June, July, or August so members are free to go paint or photograph. Then September we begin up fresh with newly elected officers and we pay our dues for the coming year. So our schedule is sort of like the school year.

We will be bringing in main dishes and asking members to bring in an appetizer or dessert to share. Please let us know at INFO at BVAA.ORG what you’re bringing so we can coordinate. Also, let us know if you’re planning on attending so that we can figure out how much to get from the restaurant. In the past the price per person was about $12. We’ll know the price for this year once we get a headcount.

Before the dinner, we’ll be having our election of fresh officers for the coming 2016-2017 year. Those officers will begin their duties in September.

Let us know if you have any questions!

Photographing Art Work by Al Weems

BVAA member Al Weems presented a master class on how to photograph artwork for our April meeting.

This was very interesting and Al gave us many tips on how to effectively shoot artwork. Points to note include:

  • Avoid glare
  • Control your light with reflective panels
  • Keep the camera and artwork parallel to each other and at the same height
  • Ensure even illumination (check with an exposure meter if you have one)
  • For submissions do not include the frame, for sales of mounted artwork include the frame
  • If 3D artwork extends beyond the main boundary of the artwork then shoot on a neutral backdrop so item can be silhouetted in PS
  • Colour matching is critical, always shoot in raw and use a colour checker ( I use the Color Checker Passport by XRite) to select neutral 18% grey and adjust in PhotoShop/LightRoom
  • If colour accuracy is essential then ensure you use a calibrated monitor and printer and/or select a professional print house
  • Always use a tripod, never shoot handheld
  • Photographing glass artwork is a challenge-may need to mask camera in black and use black clothing to prevent reflections.

Also, great LED worklights are available from Home Depot m.homedepot.com/p/Husky-5-ft-2500-Lumen-Multi-Directional-LED-Work-Light-3PL-TP-DF-24W/203455015

There are many apps for the iPhone (and Android) which can measure colour temperature.

Great presentation Al and thank you from everyone
Bob

Milford May-June Show: Florals

Every two months we rotate the show at the Milford TV Station. The drop-off for the upcoming May-June 2016 show on the theme of “Florals” is Thursday, April 28th from 6-8pm. We do these on the last Thursday of the month preceding the show.

This date is also the reception (and take down) for the existing “Green / Spring” show. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend!

Please bring food or drink to share!

The Milford TV Station is at 138 South Main Street.

The Milford people do the labels and hanging for us, so please use the online submission form to indicate what you’re bringing and also label the back of each piece with its information. This show is for BVAA members only and is free to participate in. Most artists bring in three items. They can be any size or shape – Milford has a great hanging system which can accommodate pretty much anything.
