7th Annual Anything Goes Photography Show – full details

Open Paint – Minimalism Photography – Lighting in Photography Sat Feb 9 2019

If you’re interested in photography, painting, drawing, and illustrating, we have the perfect Saturday lined up! It’ll be a great time with laughter, conversation, creativity, and the space to stretch out!

There are three components to our Saturday of events.

Open Paint 10am-3pm
First, for the entire day, it’s an open paint! All are welcome, including the public, family, and friends! It’s free! If the main room gets busy with photography, we have the back conference room dedicated for the painters. We have watercolors and acrylics on hand, or bring your own if you wish.

Minimalism Photography 10am-noon
Sometimes less is more. The simpler the image, the more you focus on each aspect on it. Just how minimalist can you go? How much can you reduce an image by and still maintain meaning?

Lighting in Photography 1-3pm
The use of light is absolutely key in photography. If you took a photo in a pitch dark room the photo would be black. Just how does light impact the image? How do shadows and highlights enhance the subject?

If the weather is nice out, visitors can also embark on an Uxbridge sketch walk. We have the maps all ready.

When:
Saturday, Feb 9, 2019
10am – 3pm

Where:
BVAA Alternatives Uxbridge Community Gallery
5 South Main Street
Uxbridge, MA 01569

Our Saturdays at the gallery include an open paint session where all styles of art are warmly welcome. Whether you’re 12 or 102, whether you’re a new beginner or a seasoned artist, we would love to have you. It’s completely free to participate in the open paint. You can bring your own paints or we’ll have watercolors and brushes to share.

There is a TON of free parking immediately next to this building. It is fully and easily handicapped accessible.

BVAA Alternatives Uxbridge Community Art Gallery Information

Feel free to show up for some or all of the day to paint. Some come for just the morning, some for the afternoon, and some for the entire time. There are several options on the same block to grab lunch if you’d like. We also bring in a pizza and those who want slices chip in a few dollars.

Our Saturday events are free, casual, relaxed, and fun! All levels are welcome.

Ask with any questions – we’d love to have you join us!

Open Paint – Time-Based Photography – Aperture-Based Photography Sat Jan 19 2019

If you’re interested in photography, painting, drawing, and illustrating, we have the perfect Saturday lined up! It’ll be a great time with laughter, conversation, creativity, and the space to stretch out!

Time-Based Photography 10am-noon
For the photographers, our first free workshop of the day is on time-based photography. This is the “T” setting on your camera. Bring your camera with you. If you have a cellphone, see if it has any way to change the time setting to take long or short exposures. We’ll be practicing with moving items like remote-controlled cars and a marble maze. We’ll also do long exposures with moving flashlights, cars, and other items. We’ll help you figure out how that “T” dial works!

Aperture-Based Photography 1-3pm
The second photography workshop of the day is all about aperture-based photography. That is the “A” setting on your camera. Again, bring your camera with you. If you have a cellphone, some of the new ones have a depth of field setting which is similar to this. In this case we’ll be playing with a narrow or long depth of field to show how that impacts a photo. Don’t know what a depth of field is? You should definitely come on out!

If the weather is nice out, visitors can also embark on an Uxbridge sketch walk. We have the maps all ready.

2019 BVAA Photography Workshop Schedule

January to March are notoriously cold months in New England. These are the perfect time to run a series of mostly-indoor seminars on photography! All levels are welcome, from beginner to advanced. These are hands-on workshops so bring your camera! Cell phones are fine – we will use them to their best ability.

All of our Saturday workshops are FREE and open to the public! If you can RSVP that is helpful, but if you find yourself free at the last minute, come on by. These are casual and fun. If you can only stop in for an hour, that’s fine. It is relaxed and stress-free.

Be sure to check out our Anything Goes Photography Show – the reception is Fri Jan 18th from 4-7pm. The show runs through Feb 23, 2019.

Also, don’t miss the fantastic Special Seminar – Stephen DiRado Photography Alzheimer’s Series. Learn more about photographing as a series and about this powerful topic.

Here’s the current plan. Note that it is of course subject to change – weather in New England is notoriously unreliable in the winter! We’ll link to full pages for each one as we get closer to the events.

1/19 – time-based photography, aperture-based photography
1/26 – black and white photography, street photography
2/2 – abstract photography, portrait photography
2/9 – minimalism photography, lighting in photography
2/16 – long exposure photography, macro photography
2/23 – architectural photography, filters in photography (also through glass balls, saran wrap, prisms, etc.)
3/2 – cancelled – snow day
3/9 – flash photography with Al Weems, high key / low key photography
3/16 – mirrors photography, James Hunt Photoshop Q&A

What else would you be interested in? Let us know!

All workshops are held at our Blackstone Valley Art Association / Open Sky (Alternatives) gallery at 5 South Main Street in Uxbridge. This location is fully handicapped accessible with no stairs at all. We are immediately next to a large free parking lot, so there are no parking issues at all. Contact us with any questions!

Sundays – For Pay Workshops

Note that in addition to our free workshops we’re also planning a few for-pay workshops on Sunday which involve supplies. The costs in these workshops primarily cover those costs of supplies. Here is what we’re planning. We will let you know when we get dates for these.

Holga Medium-Format Film Photography

Making your own Pinhole Camera
35mm Film Photography including redscale

4-week Basic Photography Course

Open Paint – Black and White Photography – Street Photography Sat Jan 26 2019

If you’re interested in photography, painting, drawing, and illustrating, we have the perfect Saturday lined up! It’ll be a great time with laughter, conversation, creativity, and the space to stretch out!

There are three components to our Saturday of events.

Black and White Photography 10am-noon
What is it about black and white photography? It can help us see the textures and shadows of images where normally color might complicate things. It can also bring a starkness and seriousness to the topic. Come play with us and learn more about the world of black and white!

Street Photography 1-3pm
Street photography isn’t about taking photos of the actual street :). Street photography is the term used to get photos of “real life happening all around us.” It’s the mother walking down the street tugging at her daughter’s hand while she stares at her smart phone. It’s the stray dog hoping for a treat. It’s about the normal daily life all around us. How do you make it real and visible?

If the weather is nice out, visitors can also embark on an Uxbridge sketch walk. We have the maps all ready.

Setting your time setting to a longer period lets the scene flow in front of the camera. You can get shimmering waterfalls and long streaks from car lights. What else happens when you play with that T setting on your camera?

Macro Photography 1-3pm
You’ll want to bring a macro lens for this one! We’ll have a clip-on one to share for cellphones. Macro photography can be amazingly fun. Experiment with us!

August 2019 Monthly Meeting – Boosting Creativity III

Creativity III

Summertime is a busy time for many of our artists, so we keep our summer workshops light and fun.

The workshop will involve Carol Frieswick’s book and card set “The Artist’s Muse – Unlock the Door to Your Creativity”. There are bunches of cards with all sorts of challenges and prompts to get you thinking out of the box with your art. We’ll have watercolors, acrylics, pastels, paper, and brushes on hand. If you have a preferred medium feel free to bring along your own paints, pastels, pencils, or camera. We will tackle the creative challenges with whatever we like to work with. Or, heck, if you normally work in one media, try changing over to another to see how it goes!

Our August 2019 monthly meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 20th from 6:30-9pm.

Location:
BVAA Alternatives / Open Sky Uxbridge Community Gallery
5 South Main Street
Uxbridge, MA 01569

This meeting and workshop is free and open to the public. No experience is necessary. The fun of our workshops is that we all try new things we’ve never done before.

Our meetings cover BVAA organization business from 6:30-7:00pm and then go into the workshop part of the evening. Feel free to come for whichever half interests you the most. In general, our monthly meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month unless otherwise announced.

All are welcome – this workshop is open to members and non-members. Feel free to bring along a friend! We’d love to see you there to try some new things and explore your creativity!

Ask with any questions!

Our meetings are supported in part by grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
