Cuttyhunk Plein Air Festival 2017

The Cuttyhunk Plein Air Festival 2017 is not run by the BVAA – we are simply sharing the news about this fun event. Here are the details from their press release:

Cuttyhunk will welcome artists for the second annual Plein Air Festival, a one-day paint-in-place event hosted by the Cuttyhunk Cultural Council, Long Range Planning Committee, and the Cuttyhunk Historical Society, when the ferry arrives on Saturday, June 17, 2017.

Teri Bordenave, a member of the Cultural Council board, has arranged for mainland artists who register for the festival to be transported aboard the M/V Cuttyhunk with a same-day round-trip ticket and lunch included in the $75 registration fee. “We were gratified to have 50 participants the first year, including some island artists, who enjoyed setting up an easel in their favorite spot and having an opportunity to sell their work before the ferry departed at 4:00 p.m.,” she said recently.

The event is limited to the first 50 registrants.

The fee for island residents who wish to participate is $30. There is no commission to any of the organizers for the sale of paintings. The budget for the second year of the festival is about $3,800 with expenses mostly offset by the registration fees and a pending festival grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

Visit www.cuttyhunkpleinair.com for more information or to register.

Kris Lombard of the Island Market and Lexi Lynch from CTHK Café will prepare tasty box lunches for the participants, including a mini lobster roll or vegetarian alternative. Island volunteers will serve as ambassadors to meet the ferry and give artists a brief overview tour from the island map, courtesy of the Museum, that they will receive with the registration packet. The _ARTY begins at 3:00 p.m. when the artists will be transported back to the ferry dock and their work will be judged by a panel of three professional jurors. Island residents, visitors, boaters, and their guests will be invited to a reception and art sale at the Coast Guard boat house.

Prizes, including a Spirit of Cuttyhunk award, will be announced and artists will depart on the ferry. Organizers hope that participants will spread the word about the natural beauty of Cuttyhunk and artists will return again and again.

Jurors will be Jodi Stevens an artist based in New Bedford who exhibits internationally and is the former lead curator at Dedee Shattuck Gallery in Westport, MA; Severin Haines, Professor Emeritus at UMass Dartmouth, who has exhibited in numerous one-person and group shows from New York to Norway and has painted large public murals in New Bedford and Fairhaven; and Cuttyhunk’s own Bob Smith, a partner in the Four-Corner Gallery in Tiverton, RI.

In case of downpour or forecast for steady rain, the festival will be held on Sunday, June 18.

If drizzle or spotty showers are predicted, the organizers are looking for sheltered porches where artists would be welcome to set up and paint.

Mainland residents are encouraged to come for the day to watch the painters at work, enjoy lunch from one of the island eateries: CTHK Café, Island Market, Raw Bar, Lucky Dog Grill, or the M/V Cuttyhunk. The ferry departs New Bedford at 9:00 a.m. and leaves the island at 4:00 p.m.

Claflin Hill Road Trip Art & Music – April 29 2017

The BVAA, in conjunction with the Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra, is offering a fun night of art and music! The orchestra provides the music while the BVAA provides the art!
Milford Town Hall
52 Main Street
Milford, MA 01757

On Saturday, April 29, 2017 from 7:30-10:00pm the Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra will be performing a show. The BVAA will have art up for patrons to enjoy before the show and during intermission. This is an art-loving audience and we see good sales at these shows.

Submissions
Deadline to submit your titles and sizes via the online form is Monday, April 24th. This gives us time to determine how many panels will be needed. There’s no fee to participate and the show is open to all BVAA members. Anne will then respond back to everyone with a copy of the labels to proof and approve. If you don’t submit your information by Monday night you may still be able to participate, but your labels might not be proofed. This show is displayed on panels so works submitted need to be less than 36″ wide in order to fit on a panel. Any sales will include a 20% BVAA commission. Full BVAA terms: BVAA Show Terms and Conditions.

Drop-Off
Drop-Off for the show will be Friday, April 28th from 4-6pm. Everything will be set up Friday night so it’s ready to go for Saturday. If you can’t make it on Friday, you can drop off Thursday during their open hours. Just put the artwork up in the performance hall. We’ve never had any issue with items being left there.

Public Viewing
Participating artists get free entry to enjoy the show! Let us know if you’re interested in attending the music!

Pick-Up
Pick-up will be Sunday morning from 8-10am. If you can’t make that, email us to make other arrangements.

Theme
The music being performed will be:

William Schuman / New England Triptych
Barber / Knoxville: Summer of 1915 – Alesia Tringale, soprano
Wallach / Berkshire Rhapsody, World Premiere
Southard / An Appalachian Trail Symphony, World Premiere
Copland / Appalachian Spring

We should aim to bring the best art in our libraries, to match the high quality of the performance. That being said, if you have two great pieces and one features a road trip theme then that might be a perfect one to choose!

Use the BVAA Online Submission Form to submit for this show.

Volunteers Needed
The BVAA is run by volunteers – please lend a hand! We need volunteers for the following activities:
* Hang the show from 5-6 on Friday
* Take it down at 8:30 on Sunday.

Let us know on your submission form how you’re able to help out. There is a 20% commission on sales – this commission is forgiven for those who help out!

2017 Spring Show – Month of June – Blackstone Valley Visitor Center

Our Blackstone Valley Art Association Spring Show will be held the entire month of June in 2017! We’ll be holding it at the lovely Blackstone Valley Visitor Center in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

You can see what the gallery space looks like here:

Blackstone Valley Visitor Center Gallery

From Carol F: Our big show of the season is coming up! I went to see the Visitor’s center, this week. Great spot. 3 walls are carpeted and the 3rd is all glass, making it very enticing to visitors to go in and see the show.  It also serves as a bus stop area so there is a fair amount of traffic. That time of year it is open on weekends. The volunteer there that day could not have been nicer and informative. I think we should leave a blurb about the BVAA history with the volunteers and some cards or membership forms.  There is a historical Mill across the street, it was late afternoon so there were great shadows on them and a waterfall. It would be fun to have a paint out there on the opening day.

Juror
The juror for the Spring Show is Craig Masten. I think you will enjoy his web site CraigMasten.com. He writes a description of each work of art.

Submissions
Submit your details online by Monday, May 22nd to give us time to create the labels and plan out the hanging. The entry fee is $20 for up to 3 pieces. One can be 16×20 or larger, but please keep the other two smaller so we have room for everyone.

Drop-Off
You can drop off works from Wednesday, May 24th through Friday, May 26th between 10am and 4pm. Ask for Wendy. If you can’t make these dates, talk with Pam or Carol to arrange an alternative plan.

Hanging
The show will be hung on Saturday, May 27th from 10-12 noon. The show will be live for viewers on Sunday, May 28th.

Reception
The public reception for this show will be on Sunday, June 11th from 1pm to 3:30pm. Invite friends and family!

Take Down
We will be taking the show down on Tuesday, June 27th between 10am and 4pm so we are done before the July 4th weekend.

Start planning what you’ll bring – this will be a good opportunity for those larger pieces if you have them!

We’ll add in more details here as we get them.

We are going to have two feature displays at this show.

Blackstone Valley Calendar
Several BVAA members had their photography featured in the Blackstone Valley Heritage Corridor Calendar. You’ll be able to see the originals featured here.

Dot Downing Memorial
Carol Frieswick has some of her paintings and a poem John wrote. If anyone has pics of her they want to share, we can do a collage as well.

The gallery takes a 20% commission, so that will be the entire commission on any sales – the BVAA wouldn’t take anything on top of that.

Press Notice for 2017 Art-Poetry Show

Here’s what we’re sending around about our upcoming March 2017 Art-Poetry show:

……..

Greetings!

I wanted to let you know about a cool show which will be at the Worcester Public Library for the month of March. Here’s the details. Let me know if you’d like to learn anything else! I can send images …

“Painting is silent poetry,
And poetry is painting that speaks.”
— Plutarch

The Blackstone Valley Art Association has paired up with the Sutton Writing Group and the Worcester Writers Collaborative to present an intriguing pairing of art and poetry. The venue is the Worcester Public Library main branch on Salem Street in Worcester. The dates are the entire month of March. It’s an adventure in creativity!

Here’s how it worked. Each visual artist was teamed up with a poet. The artist gave that poet a work of art. It might be a photograph, a watercolor, an oil painting, an acrylic, or anything else. The poet then had to write a poem about that work.

Happening at the same time, the poet wrote an original poem on anything they wanted. It might be an ode to snow. A haiku about raindrops. Whatever the poet chose to write, the artist now had to represent those words visually. The artist was allowed to interpret that poem in any way they wished.

The resulting pairs will be on display!

In some cases the artist did their best to literally portray the scene laid out in the poem. In other cases, the artist explored the mood or feeling of the written work. The same was true for the poets. Some poets described what might be happening in the visual image. Other poets delved into the feelings that the piece of art brought about.

We’ll be having a meet-the-artists-and-poets event during the exhibition period. Please check the Blackstone Valley Art Association’s website at BVAA.org to find out the date and time of that reception. On our website you’ll also be able to learn more about the artists, poets, and the works as well.

We look forward to meeting you!
