Artist’s Statement
I am a full time freelance illustrator, author and cartoonist who grew up in (and still resides in) Millbury, MA. You may have seen my humorous greeting cards on the local Stop and Shop card rack or spotted my children’s books on the shelve at Barnes and Noble. My mixed media caricature illustrations hang on the walls of local sports icons such at Robert Kraft, Larry Bird and hall of fame members of the Boston Bruins. I create logos, design t-shirts and also take on commissioned people, pet and home portraits which I render in graphite. I truly love drawing!

When I’m not creating art for my freelance customers you can find me painting local scenes in central MA or coastal Maine. Occasionally I use acrylics but I’m usually found using my favorite medium watercolors. After graduating from Millbury High in 1985 I attended David E Fanning Post Graduate school to study commercial art. It was there that I meet famed local watercolorist Alexander Gazonas. Alex was a wonderful mentor to me at Fanning. Not only did he encourage me to plein air paint around the Belmont St campus, he encouraged me to open the Scott Nelson art studio on main street in downtown Worcester when I was just 19 years old. Mr. Gazonas sadly past away a few years back but his influence and teachings are still with me today. I often find myself passing elements of his wisdom to the students I have at The Worcester Art Museum. I’ve been teaching cartooning, painting and drawing classes there since 2003.

I love the freelance art business I’m in and I hope to be drawing every form of art listed above long into my golden years. Thank you for viewing some of my local watercolors and check out my print sale page at www.scottnelsonandson.com. In addition to the watercolors featured on the BVAA page you can also buy some framed acrylic, pen and inks and even a few cartoons.
